This is a close one, Slayer obviously made the mistake of assuming Faq would no show & I think that cost him the battle. Both verses had fire mixed with dry spots but the creativity in Faqs verse was a little better, likely due to not rushing last minute as Slay did. Gonna edge this one to Faq but we need some more votes on this @mal diction @HEK TEAFY @Virbius @Jack Hallows

i read this when it dropped though & it was a dope ass battle very close.

pissed off. i had an entire breakdown of the verses written & then the page reloaded & didn't save my response. so i gotta give my dudes the condensed version, but i’m still going to give due diligence.

Vote - Faq

gotta admit i was conflicted about this battle at first. both did things that i like & things that i hate but the crazy thing is, the things they did that i hate still worked advantageously n this match lmao.

Faq’s verse structure took a sec to get used to but when i got it, it flowed well enough. i was confused at the structuring at first but remembered the 1080 character count & realized he went by that as opposed to standard bar structure & i fuck with that approach.

& of course i had to put the verse into a character counter to ensure fairness & he edged it with about 30 extra characters, but it’s excusable because 1) he went first & 2) his verse had a lot of punctuation & context margins placed to understand the direction, so it evened out.

the format he took his verse in is one i’ve gotten on Virb about in the past, with stretching wordplay to essentially make double bars in one, but that approach works here with the inclusion of the character limit, so that was cool to see get some utilization.

as far as the verse is concerned, homes put in work. nigga made an entire half verse using Harry Potter concepts & that shit was craaazy lmao. definitely gives me a call back to the $50 cypher & the HP bars that got dropped there. don’t know if this direction was connected to that but it was dope nonetheless.

rest of the verse has some filler but the multis were on point & the past, present, future segment was ill.

overall, i liked the approach Faq took here. the technicality & wordplay were cool to read & the hits outshined the misses.

i was kinda disappointed in Slayerr’s verse AT FIRST but when i read it back, it liked it a lot more. i feel like if Slayerr would have taken more time to dig into his bag of tricks, he could’ve taken this battle.

what i didn’t like about Slayerr’s verse was that the first 4 lines/bars seemed more like a rebuttal to Faq’s verse than something Slayerr would have written for a blind drop. any other time, this would’ve been an automatic DQ from me, but the antic actually worked here & i like the he spun it. plus, being in this tourney with the small number of participants, we’ve gotten to know one another & i know Slayerr didn’t feed off Faq’s verse with malicious intent, as in, purposely wanted for him to drop first just to try and dismantle the verse, like something Knoxville would do, so i didn’t penalize him in the vote for it. nah, Faq dropped fast, randomly & the structure was crazy lol & all this after an absence, so Slayerr just took the opportunity to spin some bars back about it, which was a cool angle even if it’s normally not standard. it worked well here. my only nit pick is that i feel Slayerr could’ve done so much more with the opening 4 bars by maybe condensing the rebuttal into just two lines or just going in a direction that wasn’t tailored from Faq’s angle.

so yeah, the opener was decent, the closer was aight (at least we know Slay is healthy, he talks about fruit a lot lmao).. but the magic was here:

decent but could have been executed better, weak link/chain bars are kinda played but the set up and first part of the punchline were excellent. i feel like some multis tossed in the mix & a different ending punch & this could have been a haymaker or LOTB. Slayerr could have definitely executed that i’ve seen it before.

aiiiight, so.. i like these two niggas (sometimes) & feel like they both deserved to win here but i feel like Faq had more complexity & style, while Slayerr should have took maybe an extra day to just refine his verse & add the elements into it that make him an unpredictable wordsman, cuz even with how dope Faq’s verse was, i know Slayerr could have beaten it. i mean, dude had the “fuck cologne” wordplay lmao. just gotta bring that energy to each bar & it’s in the bag.

good shit to both, this was an interesting match & closer than i probably implied, that’s why i wanted to give a detailed breakdown, cuz both deserve it, but feel i’ve captured the essence of what i’d wanted to say before.

hopefully some other votes come in as well so we can get a full spectrum of opinions.

Yo, again? For fuck’s sake. Are these league battles getting increasingly hard to call or am I just getting indecisive in my old age?

This one’s such a style clash. FaQ’s is as jam packed and complex as I’ve come to expect from him. Densely layered wordplay, reminds me of QP in his prime. Or Daylyt but less obnoxious. I read it several times and caught more and more each time. I like that.

Slayerr brought his trademark relatively simple but hard hitting bars, clean and impactful. He gives the wordplay space to breathe, with distinct setups and punches. It’s a strong contrast to FaQ’s style.

Fuck Harry fucking Potter. That said, FaQ’s opening section was pretty dope. I was initially concerned that the HP and dog angles weren’t going to relate to one another, but it was satisfying to see them come together with the Chamber of Secrets cerberus reference. The delayed gratification from unifying the two disparate strands at the end was clever writing.

Whilst it was definitely a mixed bag, his writing’s so dense that he can get away with using some wordplay elements which I’ve seen before because they contribute to a unique whole and always incorporate some truly original parts along the way. Pretty sure I missed some puns; if FaQ thinks he doesn’t need to put explanations at the end he’s grossly overestimating my intelligence. Also, when the writing’s that busy, I think not splitting it up with line breaks (and maybe even including some paragraph breaks) is a mistake. It’s already hard enough to digest.

I’m not sure whether Slayerr referencing how quickly his opponent dropped in this round is considered feeding, but I like the bar and I’m not a narc so I’mma say nah. I think calling FaQ a boring cunt missed the mark, dude’s style’s delightfully eccentric. lol. The phoning Jack from holiday angle was funny, it’s a smart way to frame the situation and the quote from Jack. Slayerr’s closer was fire, he makes that kind of breezy funny shit seem effortless.

On balance I’mma vote for FaQ.
